The First Mate’s Log recounts a three-year sailing adventure along with stories of wildlife, land and seascapes, ocean science and conservation, and human history and culture.

This is a story about a real adventure. Not one adrenaline rush after another, but the day by day sights and sounds and all the things that happen in the spaces within adventures and especially sailing adventures.

The Log is also about the desire that births an adventure and sustains it when days are filled with finding food and water and fixing the head, and maintaining a boat and cleaning the bilge and navigating the extreme challenge of living in a very small space with another person. It’s about living a life, just for a brief while, where there is no schedule, no calendar, no appointments, or quarterly reviews. There is only the day ahead and the weather report.

BE WARNED The characters in this story are imperfect, sometimes sweet and adorable, sometimes annoying and unlikable. Sometimes just plain weird. They befriend inanimate objects, get the piss scared out of them, learn new languages, make war with mosquitoes. They complain, erupt, cower, fail, succeed. They squabble about things no adult human should care about.

They come to know their darkest fears and their eyes are pealed wide open to the greatest awe there is--all inside a little boat named after a littler dog sailing upon a big, big ocean.
